Prairie was a dominant habitat within large portions of North America before European settlement. Conversion of prairies to farmland resulted in the loss of a large proportion of native floral resources, contributing to the decline of native pollinator populations. Efforts to reconstruct prairie could provide honey bees (Apis mellifera) a source of much-needed forage, especially in regions dominated by crop production. To what extent honey bees, which were introduced to North America by European settlers, use plants native to prairies is unclear. We placed colonies with pollen traps within reconstructed prairies in central Iowa to determine which and how much pollen is collected from prairie plants. Honey bee colonies collected more pollen from nonnative than native plants during June and July. During August and September, honey bee colonies collected more pollen from plants native to prairies. Our results suggest that honey bees' use of native prairie plants may depend upon the seasonality of both native and nonnative plants present in the landscape. This finding may be useful for addressing the nutritional health of honey bees, as colonies in this region frequently suffer from a dearth of forage contributing to colony declines during August and September when crops and weedy plants cease blooming. These results suggest that prairie can be a significant source of forage for honey bees in the later part of the growing season in the Midwestern United States; we discuss this insight in the context of honey bee health and biodiversity conservation.Diatoms are photosynthetic microalgae that fix a significant fraction of the world's carbon. Because of their photosynthetic efficiency and high-lipid content, diatoms are priority candidates for biofuel production. Here, we report that sporulating Bacillus thuringiensis and other members of the Bacillus cereus group, when in co-culture with the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, significantly increase diatom cell count. Bioassay-guided purification of the mother cell lysate of B. thuringiensis led to the identification of two diketopiperazines (DKPs) that stimulate both P. tricornutum growth and increase its lipid content. These findings may be exploited to enhance P. tricornutum growth and microalgae-based biofuel production. As increasing numbers of DKPs are isolated from marine microbes, the work gives potential clues to bacterial-produced growth factors for marine microalgae.Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) deliver therapy for life-threatening arrhythmias. Evidence suggests that ICD candidates have misconceptions regarding ICD therapy and unmet information needs. We undertook a pilot feasibility trial comparing a nurse-led educational intervention plus standard care, vs. standard pre-ICD implantation care. Secondary aims included examination of anxiety, quality of life, and shock anxiety.
Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator candidates were consented and randomized to standard pre-ICD implantation care vs. standard care plus a nurse-led educational intervention. The primary feasibility outcomes included recruitment rate, consent rate, randomization rate, proportion of participants able to complete all questionnaires, time to deliver intervention, and intervention topics completion. At baseline, demographic and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) anxiety scores were collected. Four weeks post-ICD implantation, participants completeatient setting. Further study to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention on patient-reported outcomes is warranted.The cytochrome P450 CYP78A5/KLUH in Arabidopsis thaliana is predicted to be involved in the synthesis of a mobile signal molecule that has a pleiotropic function that is distinct from classical phytohormones. CYP78A5 has five close relatives in Arabidopsis. We first investigated their functions, focusing on the plastochron, leaf size, and leaf senescence. Our analyses revealed that CYP78A5 and CYP78A7 are involved in the plastochron and leaf size, and CYP78A6 and CYP78A9 are involved in leaf senescence. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/unc3866.html Complementation analyses using heterologous promoters and expression analyses suggested that CYP78A isoforms have a common biochemical function and are functionally differentiated via organ-specific expression. Complementation analyses using boundary and organizing center-specific promoters suggested that both CYP78A5 and AMP1 act in a non-cell-autonomous manner. Analyses of multiple cyp78a mutants and crosses between cyp78a and amp1 mutants revealed that AMP1/LIKE AMP1 (LAMP1) and CYP78A isoforms regulate plastochron length and leaf senescence in the same genetic pathway, whereas leaf size is independently regulated. Furthermore, we detected feedback regulation between CYP78A6/CYP78A9 and AMP1 at the gene expression level. Many modifiable risk factors have been reported to synergistically act in the development of CVDs. We aimed to compare the predictive power of anthropometric indices, as well as to provide the best cut-off point for these indicators in a large population of Iranian people for the prediction of CVDs and CVD risk factors.
All the data used in the present study were obtained from Khuzestan comprehensive health study (KCHS). Anthropometric indices, including BMI (body mass index), WC (waist circumference), HC (hip circumference), WHR (waist-to-hip ratio), WHtR (waist-to-height ratio), ABSI (a body shape index), as well as CVD risk factors [dyslipidaemia, abnormal blood pressure (BP), and hyperglycaemia] were recorded among 30429 participants. WHtR had the highest adjusted odds ratios amongst anthropometric indices for all the risk factors and CVDs.
